Life Insurance with a Pre-Existing Condition

Many carriers offer coverage for applicants with health histories β€” here's how the process typically works.

A pre-existing condition does not automatically disqualify you from life insurance. Carriers underwrite differently, and several specialize in applicants with diabetes, heart conditions, mental health histories, cancer survivorship, and other circumstances. The key is matching your situation to a carrier whose underwriting guidelines fit.

Underwriting typically involves a written application with health questions, a review of medical records (an APS, or attending physician statement), and sometimes a paramedical exam β€” a brief in-home or telehealth visit to take basic measurements. Some carriers offer simplified-issue or guaranteed-issue products that skip parts of this process in exchange for smaller face amounts or modified benefit structures.

Independent agencies have a real advantage here because they can shop multiple carriers and find the one most likely to approve your situation at the most favorable rate. A captive agent can only offer one carrier's products, which may not be the right fit for a non-standard health profile.

If one carrier declines or rates you, that is not the end of the road β€” another carrier may have a different view. Honest disclosure on the application is essential; misstatements can void coverage.
